Pastoral ministry is a calling marked by joy, faithfulness, and sacrifice but it is also accompanied by sustained emotional, spiritual, and relational weight. Over time, the pressures of shepherding God’s people, caring for family, navigating conflict, and carrying unseen burdens can quietly erode clarity, joy, and resilience.
Sabbatical Care through Gospel Care Canada is designed to provide pastors and their spouses with intentional space to slow down, rest, and receive focused biblical care during seasons of transition, fatigue, or discernment. This care is not a retreat in the conventional sense nor is it crisis intervention alone. Rather, it is a thoughtfully structured season of pastoral counselling, reflection, and reorientation before God.
Sabbatical care may be especially helpful when:
• Ministry fatigue or burnout symptoms are emerging
• Personal or family suffering intersects with ministry responsibilities
• Clarity, direction, or renewed steadiness is needed
• A church desires to proactively support the long-term health of its pastor and family
Care typically includes extended counselling sessions, guided reflection on personal and ministry history, assessment of warning signs and life domains, and a gentle reestablishing of rhythms shaped by Scripture, prayer, and rest. Attention is given not only to ministry demands but to the pastor’s life recognizing that shepherds are first sheep under the care of the Good Shepherd.
Churches are often involved in supporting this season, ensuring that sabbatical care is framed not as a sign of failure but as an act of wisdom, humility, and stewardship.
If you are unsure whether Sabbatical Care is the best place to begin, our intake process will help guide next steps with care and clarity. We do offer a 30 minute Initial Consultation, you can select this option when requesting an appointment.
