ABUSE & TRAUMA

Biblical counselling for abuse and trauma is designed to provide careful, compassionate support for individuals who have experienced overwhelming, threatening, or deeply harmful situations. These experiences often disrupt a person’s sense of safety, trust, and stability, affecting how they relate to themselves, others, and God.

This form of counselling differs from general individual counselling in both focus and pace. Care is taken to establish safety, reduce harm, and help individuals make sense of their experiences without minimizing suffering or rushing toward resolution. Our counsellors are trained to walk thoughtfully with those affected by trauma while remaining anchored in the hope, truth, and comfort found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

As biblical counsellors, we do not provide licensed psychotherapy or clinical treatments such as EMDR, CBT, or ERP. Our care is rooted in Scripture, helping individuals understand their experiences, respond wisely, and grow in faith and stability over time. While aspects of biblical counselling may overlap with common therapeutic insights, our approach is distinct in its foundation, goals, and methods.

At the same time, we recognize that wise care may involve additional support. When appropriate, we are glad to work alongside physicians, psychotherapists, or psychiatrists to ensure individuals receive comprehensive and well-coordinated care.

Common areas of focus may include:
• Recent traumatic events
• Past or ongoing abuse (emotional, physical, sexual, financial, or spiritual)
• Trauma-related fear, hyper-vigilance, or emotional numbness
• Intrusive memories and/or shame
• Rebuilding trust, boundaries, and personal safety
• Learning how to respond wisely to triggers and stress

Counselling in these situations seeks to honour the seriousness of what is being endured or what has been endured while helping individuals experience God’s nearness, care, and strength. Scripture is applied with great care and never to silence pain, assign blame, or demand premature forgiveness but to offer truth, refuge, and a path toward restoration over time.

Some of our counsellors hold specialized training and certification in trauma-informed biblical care through organizations such as the Christian Trauma Healing Network. When appropriate, counselling may also include guidance around practical steps, protective measures, and coordination with other supports.

Counselling format & availability:
• Weekly and bi-weekly sessions with pacing adapted to the individual’s needs
• Available in person (Squamish, BC and London, ON) and online (Canada-wide)
• Provided by certified biblical counsellors with trauma-specific training

If you are unsure whether your situation falls under abuse or trauma care, or whether another form of counselling may be more appropriate, our intake process will help you discern next steps safely and carefully.
