Michael Krahn | Counsellor

I have a deep passion for walking alongside those who feel weary, burdened, or stuck—whether in personal struggles, relationships, or ministry. I focus on providing a safe, grace-filled place for men, couples, and ministry leaders to process challenges and find renewal. Some of my areas of interest include pastoral and ministry burnout, leadership stress and conflict, spiritual struggles, marriage and family challenges, and personal growth.

I have been in pastoral ministry for over 15 years as a pastor, coach, and confidante to ministry leaders. I received my Certification in Biblical Counseling through the Association of Biblical Counselors and have experience in leadership coaching, pastoral care, and spiritual direction. I am also the founder of The Shepherd’s Refuge, a ministry dedicated to supporting pastors in their spiritual and emotional well-being.

I’ve been married to Anne Marie since 1995, and we have three adult daughters. We live in Ontario, Canada, where I enjoy writing, photography, songwriting, and meaningful conversations over good coffee.

More about Michael…

What led you to become a counsellor?

Through years of pastoral ministry, I witnessed many people struggling in isolation. I’ve experienced my own seasons of burnout and hardship, which deepened my conviction that pastors and leaders need more honest conversations and soul care than they currently have access to.

What do you enjoy most about your work as a counsellor?

I love seeing people move from discouragement to hope, from confusion to clarity. It’s a privilege to witness transformation as people rediscover God’s grace in their lives and uncover truths in Scripture that were unknown or obscure to them.

How do you take care of your own mental and emotional well-being?

I prioritize time in Scripture, prayer, journalling, and deep conversations with trusted friends. I also set healthy boundaries around work and rest to avoid burnout.

Do you have any specific areas of expertise or personal interests within counselling?

Pastoral burnout, leadership transitions, and spiritual resilience are areas I focus on.

What are your favourite books or resources related to counselling or personal growth?

The Contemplative Pastor by Eugene Peterson
Good & Angry by David Powlison
The Psalms – a constant source of wisdom for soul care

How do you integrate your faith or spirituality into your personal life?

My faith is the foundation of everything I do. Whether through prayer, Scripture, writing, or counselling, I seek to align my life with God’s truth and grace.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of your counselling work?

I love writing, photography, songwriting, and spending time outdoors. I also enjoy deep conversations over good coffee.

Are there any personal experiences or life lessons that have shaped your approach to counselling?

Yes—having walked through my own season of burnout and spiritual exhaustion, I understand the toll that unaddressed struggles can take. These experiences have given me a deep empathy for those in similar situations.

How do you handle stress or challenges in your life?

I lean on Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, and intentional rest. I’ve learned that solitude and silence are crucial for hearing God’s voice in difficult seasons.

What is one piece of advice or wisdom you find yourself sharing often with clients?

Let’s work together to move from asking “Why is God doing this?” to asking “What is God doing through this?”
