Tony Johnston | Associate Counsellor

I have always had a heart for those going through various trials and suffering. I firmly believe true growth, healing, and change happens when believers walk with one another through the ups and downs of life. Whether you’re facing challenges related to faith, relationships, addiction, temptations, or mental health, I am here to walk alongside you with love and compassion.

I am a certified biblical counsellor with the Association of Biblical Counselors (ABC). I also hold a BSc in Ministry Leadership from Moody Bible Institute. I have experience helping people in all walks of life and have been extremely blessed to see lives changed through the power of the Holy Spirit.

On a personal note, I live in London, Ontario with my amazing wife. One of my favourite things in life are movies. I can get easily carried away chatting about all things film!

More about Tony…

What led you to become a counselor?

I have always had a heart for those suffering around me, and I enjoy getting to know people and hear their stories. It was after I attended Cross Conference that I found out about the need for good biblical counsellors and started my education.

What do you enjoy most about your work as a counsellor?

What I love most about counselling is walking alongside someone and witnessing their growth and the hope they find through the Holy Spirit and the work of Christ. To see them taste that, despite their circumstances, the Lord is good.

How do you take care of your own mental and emotional well-being?

I spend time in the Word and in prayer, striving to grow in my own faith. I also prioritize spending quality time with my wife and with older, wiser believers with whom I can share my walk.

Do you have any specific areas of expertise or personal interests within counselling?

I really enjoy helping young men, as they often try to shoulder burdens on their own. I love being able to help them find their true strength in Christ.

What are your favourite books or resources related to counselling or personal growth?

My favourite counselling books are Gentle and Lowly by Ortlund and Trusting God by Bridges. Both of these books have been tremendously helpful for me, helping me to better understand God’s love and sovereignty.

How do you integrate your faith or spirituality into your personal life?

My faith is the foundation of every aspect of my life, shaping how I interact with others, manage my finances, and approach daily decisions. The Word of God is my wisdom and I try daily to apply it to every aspect of my life.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of your counselling work?

Outside of counseling, I have a deep love for film and live music. I can—and will—talk your ear off about what movies and music you like (to no end).

Are there any personal experiences or life lessons that have shaped your approach to counselling?

Growing up, I struggled with my mental health without letting others know. I held that weight silently; I know what it’s like to try and bear it by yourself. My experience struggling on my own is one of the reasons I love being able to be there for others as they go through trials.

How do you handle stress or challenges in your life?

I run to my Saviour for peace and wisdom, because as chaotic as things might seem, I know He is in control. I am also blessed to have faithful friends and mentors around me who I lean on for prayer and counsel when the going gets tough.

What is one piece of advice or wisdom you find yourself sharing often with clients?

My favourite bit of advice that comes up often in counselling is to remember that your marriage is your most important ministry. God placed you and your spouse together not to make your lives easy, but to use your marriage to form you into the people God wants you to be.
